SAN ANTONIO ROMANCE
Hot Spots for Hot Shots

Take any Saturday afternoon and go to the McNay Art Museum or one of the San Antonio Missions, and you’ll see it: brides in all their finery posing for their bridal portraits.

Or, perhaps you’ll see couples locked in an embrace under a tree, smiling as the camera clicks an engagement photo.

San Antonio is a romantic destination, with many inspirational spots to capture the perfect portrait. Photographers agree that the traditional romantic spots—along the Riverwalk, in front of one of the historic Missions (including the Alamo), and the McNay Art Museum—are charming, but other sites can also capture the personality of your wedding.

“A romantic photo is what’s romantic to the couple,” says photographer Marcus Revilla, adding that he’s clicked couples in very unusual places, such as while hiking or on the carousel at the historic Kiddie Park on Broadway.

He’s also a big fan of downtown San Antonio. “I love downtown,” he adds. “I guess I’m an ‘urban’ shooter.”

Winfield and Karen Little say they’ve traveled to Austin, the coast and other location shoots, such as under the cypress trees in the Guadalupe State Park, to photograph clients in natural settings.

“It’s more about being relaxed and capturing the couple as they are, instead of in a portrait setting where they have memories of someone telling them to ‘stand up straight,’” Karen Little explains.

Orme has been pleased with the photographs of couples at The Vineyards, Spring Hill Event Center and Castle Avalon. But Revilla cautions that many traditional reception and ceremony venues—such as the Southwest Center for Art & Craft—while picturesque, are reserved for those who are hosting their events there.

According to the photographers, the public venues, such as the Missions and the Riverwalk are open to the public without reservations, but are subject to park rules and regulations.

Ultimately, the site you choose for photography should be a place that has significance to you. Perhaps it’s a spot where you met, had your first date, or became engaged.

“It doesn’t matter where you go,” Karen Little says. “It’s about building a connection between the place and the couple. A skilled photographer can make any location look great.”
